When people reach their middle ages they naturally start to think about a final retirement home. Mature couples often embark upon new leisure activities and their priorities change. Residential developments that are specifically meant for people aged fifty five or older is gaining in popularity. These developments are marketed as either age restricted or age targeted communes. In the case of the latter there are no strict rules regarding the ages of the residents but in the case of the former only people aged fifty five and older are allowed.

Some people think that age restricted developments are synonymous with retirement villages. This is not the case and there are, in fact, big differences. Retirement villages offer services such as assisted living, frail care, shared meals and a host of other services not found in age restricted residential developments. Among the other differences between age restricted villages and retirement centers is the matter of who may be in residence full time. Retirement villages do not normally allow children or other family members to take up residence with their parents or grandparents. Visitors to retirement villages are normally restricted to certain areas and even the frequency of their visits are sometimes the subject of certain rules.

Most age restricted residential areas are in or very near urban areas. Residents are therefore normally close to shopping centers, hospitals and other amenities whilst still enjoying a safe, closed community. In most cases these developments feature a large variety of sporting facilities such as golf courses, bathing pools and gymnasiums. Classes are available for those that want to take up a new hobby ad there are often numerous organized activities catering for every possible taste.

There are numerous advantages to be had when opting for this type of life style. In most cases, security is strict and some form of access control is in place. Many residents enjoy the fact that they are living among people their own age. They make new friends and they enjoy the relaxed social atmosphere and mutual support from neighbors typical of these villages.

Anybody wanting to move to one of these villages should spend some time doing homework. It is imperative to visit the development and to inspect the various facilities. It is equally important to get full details regarding the cost of living in the area. For example, in many cases there are additional charges for services such as the maintenance of the shared facilities.

These villages are secure and they have been specifically designed to suit the life style of mature people nearing retirement age. Many residents find new interest and they enjoy a full social calendar with people that share their interests and values.
