Vision Screener Simply Described Here

By Celia Hall

Vision screener refers to a tool for the screening various disorders that affect the eye. It assists in grouping the persons with eye problems or those that are in danger of acquiring eye disorders from the ones without any disorder. It therefore monitors major visual disorders.

Eyes are sensitive organs in the body. They are predisposed to different problems such as misalignment of your eyes, reduced vision, near sightedness, farsightedness among others. These conditions are entirely treatable when detected early. However, they can cause loss of vision and blindness when discovered late. Therefore, ophthalmologists find it necessary to use these eye screening devices for early detection of these disorders.

There are variable types of eye screening devices. Each one is used for a particular purpose, which depends on the type of eye screening. It means that you can use one or many at a time during any eye screening procedure.

Visual acuity means to how far or sharp your eyes see as compared to the normal eye. This eye entity is usually assessed by using a Snellen chart. This tool has different letters printed on it. The numbers or letters vary in sizes. You are made to stand at around six meters from the chart in order to be screened.

The numbers or the letters in Snellen chart have fractions written beside them. The numerator of these fractions represent the distance at which you can see the letter, while the denominator represents the distance at which the normal eye can see the same size of the letter. Right eye is usually screened before left eye.

Isihara chart has thirty eight plates representing all the colors and is used to screen for color blindness. The effectiveness of this tool varies according to the balancing of the colors in your screen or monitor. A monitor with well balanced colors is more effective than the one whose colors are poorly balanced.

Autorefractors are also used to assess the predisposing factors for poor vision in an eye without any underlying abnormality, a condition known as amblyopia. They have one lens and only monitor this condition. They are used in the undilated eyes and they approximate the refractive index of your eyes. These tools are more beneficial since they are applicable to adults and children, those who can talk and also those who cannot talk.

Ophthalmoscope is another vision screener. It assesses the retinal condition as well as the condition in the eye lenses. However, it makes use of two lenses and is only used in dilated eyes.

The devices for screening eye disorders are easily available in the market. They are mainly found in hospitals, public and private clinics, and also in the offices of the eye specialists. Some of them are big while others are small. However, most of them are portable.

Each vision screener differs in prices. Some are less expensive while others are more costly. This is based on the type and efficiency of the instrument itself. On the other hand, they are fundamental for constant evaluation of the eye function.
