Your Guide to Some Best Practices to Use for Trout Fishing

By Mario Lawlor

One of the first things you need to do in order to be successful when you fish, is to learn the traits and quirks of the fish you want to catch. Why is this so? Because knowledge is power and the more you know about the habits of a particular fish, the better chances you have to outwit them. Trout are intelligent fish. You need to learn what you can about them for this very reason. It's not sufficient to just show up and start fishing. You will not have any success if you don't know anything about trout. If you want to be successful fishing for trout, learn and apply the three tactics we will tell you about in the rest of this article.

Below are some guidelines when you plan to fish for trout in clear water. You should make an intelligent estimate of what size fish you might hook relative to the tackle you will be using. Pay attention to the type of water you are fishing in, and its condition. Make sure your gear and tackle is appropriate.

How you position yourself and your bait to trout can make all the difference on some days and this is for stream or moving water trout fishing. When trout are hungry, they more or less position themselves so they can catch food in the water as it flows by. This is efficient because the water is moving and they don't have to expend much energy. Let out enough line so your bait can act like regular food as it travels down a little bit. If you're new to trout fishing, then you'll have to just do this and get the hang of it. You might not realize that the phases of the moon have an effect on trout, but they do and you can find a greater amount of activity when the moon is in the right places during its phases. Not surprisingly, you will need to be either fishing, on the water or really close to it if you want to reap the rewards. Another element that has a direct effect on trout and other fish is the weather. You will need to get a grasp of the weather conditions what role they will play on the dissolved oxygen in the water. Furthermore, it is more demanding to fish for trout on bright and sunny days. You would be surprised how easy it is for trout to hear and see you coming and this is a result of their acute senses. You need to be as hushed as possible and certainly 'invisible', if you can be because they can see you up on the bank.

If you are serious about wanting to catch the best brown trout you can, no matter where you are fishing, consider waiting until after sunset to set out. It all depends, of course, on what the weather is like now and what it's been like for the preceding few days. Sometimes trout won't feel safe feeding during the day, so will wait until after sundown to feed. When the temperature at night is in the low 70s, you will also find the fishing conditions more favorable. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you want to catch bigger fish, you must use larger minnows as your bait. An up spike in oxygen levels can trigger ferocious feeding responses. And this is the situation when your choice of bigger minnow bait can yield impressive results.

Don't fall into the error that a lot of trout anglers with no experience do. They buy hooks that are way too big for the trout. The third item that is very important to get right, after the size of your reel and rod, is the size of the hook you will use. With fly fishing the hooks are already small so you can do that if you wish. Nevertheless, if you are a beginner, it isn't a good idea to begin with fly fishing. Trout fishing is enough of a challenge for the moment. The best size hook to use, for safety and success, is a size 8. Don't use anything larger. You can do 10 if you like, but the size 8 is ideal and it just makes life a lot easier.

Invest in your trout fishing sport by getting those little tools and accessories that make your movements and tasks more efficient. Bags and anything that you can attach to yourself will obviously be better since it's more convenient. You can very easily scare the fish right out of your area by splashing around with traveling back to the side of the stream just to fetch something. Your ability to be totally quiet is part of the challenge and it's really a must do thing. Other than that, you will have to gain knowledge of trout fishing. And there are plenty of books and DVDs available. Of course, nothing measures up to the plain old experience of getting out there and dropping your fishing line in the water. You'll lose your fair share and have days when you go home with nothing to report. Nonetheless, you've still increased your education during this process.
